Lure Fishing UK

Experience of a novice Lure Angler (or lack of it)!

I recently became a member of the Lure Anglers Society after a few years of intermittently trying to catch Pike on lures of many different shapes and sizes. I hope I can get to know other anglers in the area I live (Middlesbrough, Northeast England) and by doing so gain some techniques from them and improve my own angling. Perhaps I can give you some idea of my experiences so far!

I originally lived in East Yorkshire in the late 1960s / early 1970s (yes youve guessed Im long in the tooth now) and fished various waters around there (Hornsea Mere, Constable Burton, Barmston Drain etc. to name but a few). I caught numerous jacks from all of these venues, mostly on lures but often with other methods. I gave up Pike fishing for a number of years after that and only recently started again in the North East, fishing mainly the River Swale and others nearby. I mainly used deadbaits at first.

Then I came across an article written in one of my local papers which described that there were Pike being caught on the Swale using lures, something I had not done properly for years. I dug out my old gear but decided that it was time to update, after all this time there must be better stuff around. What a surprise! A fantastic selection of lures available now, light yet powerful rods and also advice available in the form of the Lure Society. I am not an old stick in the mud (although some would like me to be under it!) and also have taken big time to the Internet and all that offers. This gives me access to e-mail as well as other wonderful sites to explore!

I bought myself some updated gear and off I went. I have really enjoyed getting back into lure fishing and have also been converted to using the new braided line. Fantastic stuff and you can feel every movement of the lure. When I went fishing for the first time with it I took a low double figure fish right from under the nose of a Barbel fisherman on the opposite bank to where I was. To say he was not amused is an understatement! I am also going to give using plastic baits a go there seems to be no end to the opportunities available now to someone who is open to ideas.

I am hoping to get to meet some other members in the not too distant future but unfortunately will not be able to make the exhibition later in the year because of family problems. However if anyone out there wants to meet up with me to give me advice or fish together I will be only too pleased to arrange something. I can be contacted on my e-mail address [email protected] or by telephoning 01642 599894.

I am really getting back into lure fishing after far too long a break. My advice to anyone is to not to wait but to get stuck in. After all we only get one chance.or do we? Will I come back as a Pike to get revenge?

Tight lines everyone
